Sleep Tight: Safe, Non-toxic Hypoallergenic Pillows
CozyCloud Deluxe Pillows are CertiPUR-US certified. Why is this important? Because not all bamboo memory foam pillows are. Nor are all the expensive memory foam pillows that you see at department stores and online. That is important to know because sleeping on average of 8 hours a day equates to 1/3 of your life. Inhalation of toxic chemicals when you sleep can have a compounding effect in your body. We are very proud that CozyCloud Deluxe Pillows are made from CertiPUR-US certified foam made 100% in the USA.
What is a CertiPUR-US certification?
CertiPUR-US is a certification program that started in 2007. It is a collaboration of environmentalists, scientists and bedding and furniture industry leaders to ensure that the foams being made or brought into the USA do not contain chemicals that can cause cancer and genetic defects. It is a rigorous certification program which the CozyCloud Deluxe Pillows have passed and ensures that our pillow are:
- Made without ozone depleters
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) were in the past (pre year 2000), used to make foam in the US. CFC is also still currently used to make foam in other parts of the world. CertiPUR-US has banned the use of CFC and other ozone depleters.
- Made without PBDEs, TDCPP and Tris flame retardants
PBDEs were effectively banned in the U.S. by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2005. Other flame retardants that have been identified by the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) as substances that may cause cancer, may cause genetic defects or may damage fertility or unborn child (1A, 1B) may not be used in CertiPur certified foam. TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) are among these flame retardants.
- Made without mercury, lead, formaldehyde and other heavy metals.
CertiPUR-US certified means that Cozycloud Deluxe Pillows are made without mercury, lead, formaldehyde and other heavy metals. In 2011, the US National Toxicology Program has described formaldehyde as a cancer causing agent in humans. Formaldehyde is normally used in fabrics to make it wrinkle-free.
- Made without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commision
The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (2009) eliminated the use of seven specific phthalates for use in children’s toy and child care items. CertiPUR-US goes a step further by requiring detailed laboratory analysis of foam extractions and prohibiting the use of phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in all CertiPUR-US certified foams.
- Low VOC emissions
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a major component of air pollution. VOC emissions from household products are also a concern for indoor air quality. CertiPUR-US certified foams are tested using a small chamber test standardized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).* In the test, foam samples are conditioned for 72 hours after which emissions of total organic compounds are measured. Results of this test verify that CertiPUR-US compliant foams have low emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
- *ISO voluntary standards
is one of the largest voluntary standards development organizations in the world, and is a trusted source for technical standards for materials, products, systems, and services. Known for their high technical quality and market relevancy, ISO standards have an important role in the technical infrastructure that guides design, manufacturing and trade in the global economy.
